Marijuana is the most readily available drug in Massachusetts. Most of the marijuana found in the state originates in Mexico. Locally-produced and Canada-produced marijuana are also available.
Methamphetamine poses a low threat to Massachusetts and is only occasionally available in the state. However, wide abuse of methamphetamine has been noted in western Massachusetts and some areas of Cape Cod. Methamphetamine is sometimes abused at rave parties by young adults of 18-26. Individuals in their late 30s to early 40s also abuse this drug.
The availability and abuse of MDMA, GHB, ketamine and LSD pose an increasing threat to Massachusetts. Abuse of diverted pharmaceuticals is also ever increasing. Doctor shopping rings, forged or altered prescriptions, and diversions from an individual's prescriptions are the most common methods of diverting OxyContin in the state.
According to National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 2.03% of Massachusetts citizens reported in the past year, their dependence on illicit drugs. The Massachusetts Youth Health Survey shows that 4.7% of Massachusetts high school students surveyed in 2002, reported abusing club drugs within the 30 days prior to the survey. More than half of Massachusetts high school students surveyed in 2001, reported using marijuana at least once during their lifetimes.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 60% of the Massachusetts population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Over 21% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 69% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 63%.
In the survey, more than 27% of the of the Massachusetts people showed binge alcohol use and around 35% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 14%. In the state, 8.6% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
