Crack cocaine remains readily available in all urban areas of Missouri. Mexican black tar, which is easily available in the St. Louis area, has only limited availability in Kansas City. Mexican brown heroin, Southwest Asian heroin, and South American heroin are also obtainable in these areas, but to a lesser extent.

Marijuana is readily available throughout Missouri. Marijuana grown indoors continues to increase. Mexican and locally produced methamphetamine has remained available throughout Missouri. Purity levels are higher for locally produced methamphetamine than for methamphetamine imported from Mexico. MDMA is available at dance clubs and on colleges or university campuses all over Missouri. Although LSD is available throughout the state, it is not considered as a significant drug threat. GHB and Rohypnol are also available within the state; and OxyContin abuse is increasing throughout Missouri.

National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2002) indicate that 1.90% of Missouri citizens reported their past year dependence on illicit drugs. Around 41.3% of Missouri high school students surveyed in 2003, reported using marijuana during their lifetime about half of the Missouri 12th graders surveyed in 2003, reported using marijuana at least once during their lifetime.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 53% of the Missouri population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Around 20% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 65% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 56%.

In the survey, around 25% of the of the Missouri people showed binge alcohol use and more than 38% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 13%. In the state, 7.89% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
