Drug Abuse

Powder form of Cocaine is easily available throughout Nebraska. However, availability of crack cocaine is limited to the metropolitan areas in the state. While heroin abuse and availability are decreasing in the state, Mexican black tar and brown powdered heroin are available in some areas.

Marijuana is the most widely available and abused drug in Nebraska. Most of the marijuana available in the state is of Mexican origin. Locally cultivated marijuana is also available in Nebraska. In 2000, Nebraska Legislative Bill 273 was passed, allowing for the legal production of industrial hemp having no more than 3/10th of one percent THC.

Methamphetamine is the major drug of concern for law enforcement in Nebraska and is obtainable in almost every city and town in the state. Most of the methamphetamine available in Nebraska is from the southwest border states. However, locally produced methamphetamine is also readily available in many areas. The popularity and availability of club drugs remains a concern to law enforcement in Nebraska.

OxyContin is extensively available throughout the state. The abuse of diverted pharmaceuticals, including codeine, diazepam, hydrocodone, methadone, and morphine, is an increasing threat to Nebraska.

The NSDUH (2002-2003) indicate that 1.93% of Nebraska citizens reported in the past year their dependence on illegal drugs. In a 2003 survey, around 34.6% of high school students reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetime.

In the survey, more than 26% of the of the Nebraska people showed binge alcohol use and around 38% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 14%. In the state, 10.18% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
