Drug Addiction Treatment, Drug and Alcohol Rehabs Recovery and Abuse

Cocaine is considered a major problem all over the state of Utah. Availability of crack cocaine is confined to big cities of the state. Heroin abuse is a serious threat to Utah. Mexican brown and black tar heroin are easily available and widely abused in the state. However, distribution of heroin in larger quantities is confined to major cities.



Marijuana is a major drug threat to Utah. It is widely abused in the state. Marijuana originated in Mexico is the most common type found in the state. Domestically produced marijuana is also available. There are reports about marijuana cultivation in Utah.

The most threatening drug of abuse in Utah is Methamphetamine. It is easily available in big quantities here. Mexican as well as locally produced Methamphetamine are available in Utah.

GHB, MDMA, and ketamine are considered rapidly emerging drug threats to Utah. However, use and availability LSD have shown a decrease. The abuse of diverted drugs is fast becoming a major problem in the state. Commonly misused pharmaceuticals include oxycondones, benzodiazepines, hydrocodones, and Ritalin. Forged and fraudulent prescriptions are widely used in the state to divert pharmaceuticals.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), approximately 1.77% of Utah citizens reported their past year dependence on illicit drugs. In 2003, 21.6% of high school students in Utah reported using marijuana once in their lifetime.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 30% of the Utah population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. This is the lowest rate anywhere in the U.S. More than 10% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 36% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 31%.

In the survey, around 16% of the Utah people showed binge alcohol use and nearly 51% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 8%. This is one of the lowest rates in the country. In the state, 6.87% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
