Fraudulent prescriptions, doctor shopping, pharmacy break-ins, and hospital thefts remain the main sources of these drugs. Use of OxyContin as a pharmaceutical drug of abuse is also increasing in the state.

National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that 1.86% of Oklahoma citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. A 2003 survey of Oklahoma high school students indicate that 42.5% reported trying marijuana at least once in their lifetime. Around 44% of Oklahoma 12th graders surveyed in 2003 reported using marijuana at least once during their lifetime.
