Cocaine, which is readily available in Oregon, is not considered the main drug of abuse in Oregon. Methamphetamine and heroin continues to be preferred by most of the drug abusers in the state. The main types of heroin available in the state are Mexican black tar and brown powder heroin.
Marijuana is easily available in Oregon. In December 1998, Oregon's Medical Marijuana Act came into effect. The Act provides legal protection against criminal charges of marijuana possession, use or production of marijuana for medical purposes and the possession, use and production otherwise meet the terms of the Act. However, in April 2002, the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners suspended the license of a doctor who had approved a very large number of medical marijuana applications in the state.
Methamphetamine is one of the most widely abused drugs in Oregon. Mexican methamphetamine and domestically produced methamphetamine are available throughout the state. In the western areas, multi-pound quantities of meth are easily available. Only smaller quantities are available in eastern parts of the state. MDMA is available all over Oregon. The drug is accessible in different quantities in the larger cities and on college campuses. Hydrocodone and benzodiazepines are the most widely abused pharmaceutical drugs in Oregon.
According the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 1.61% of Oregon citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. During the 2002-2003 academic school year, 23.4% of Oregon 11th graders surveyed reported using marijuana within the past month.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 53% of the Oregon population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Above 17% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 65% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 56%.
In the survey, around 21% of the Oregon people showed binge alcohol use and around 40% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 11%. In the state, 7.37% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
