Drug Abuse

Powder and crack forms of cocaine are widely available and frequently abused in Pennsylvania. However, South American heroin has surpassed cocaine as the greatest drug threat to the state. Heroin availability and purity are steadily increasing in western Pennsylvania. The easy availability of heroin has decreased its price considerably.

Marijuana is easily and widely available in both wholesale and retail quantities in Pennsylvania. The majority of marijuana available in Pennsylvania is of Mexican origin. Domestically produced marijuana and marijuana produced in other states, Jamaica, and Canada are also obtainable in the state.

Pennsylvania is a major manufacturer of Methamphetamine. The production and abuse of methamphetamine are increasing steadily in the state, particularly in the northwestern parts. MDMA is easily available in the larger cities and near college campuses. Diverted pharmaceutical drugs pose a serious drug threat to the state. Dilaudid, Vicodin, OxyContin, and Xanax are widely available in Pennsylvania.

National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2002) indicate that 1.76% of Pennsylvania citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. Around 43% of Pennsylvania high school seniors surveyed in 2003 reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetimes and around 21.4% of high school seniors surveyed in 2003, reported using marijuana within the past 30 days.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 51% of the Pennsylvania population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 18% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 65% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 53%.

In the survey, around 23% of the Pennsylvania people showed binge alcohol use and more than 37% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, the past month binge alcohol use is more than 11%. In the state, 6.93% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
